Can Wooden Window Frames be Repaired?

Last Updated on September 18, 2024

Rot can occur on wooden window frames, especially those installed in older homes. Fungus eats away at the wood when it is left exposed to the elements. Fortunately, wooden window frames with minor rot can be successfully repaired via the following DIY tactics.

What is wood rot?

Wood-decaying fungi, which survive on moisture, are responsible for eating away at wooden window frames. As the organisms digest the window frames, the wood decays. The wooden window frames begin to warp, discolor, or shrink, leading to structural issues and decreased energy efficiency.

Why do wooden window frames rot?

As mentioned, the wood-decaying fungi feeds on moisture. When moisture seeps into the wooden window frames due to structural inadequacies or installation mistakes, the moisture becomes trapped. The fungus then has an opportunity to grow and multiply in this nourishing habitat.

How is wood rot identified?

Exposed surfaces on the window frame reveal the extent of rot. Flaking and discoloration are vulnerable points, allowing wood rot to enter if the frame remains untreated or unsealed. Rotted wood also depresses easily; push down with a finger or screwdriver to evaluate its softness.

Solid, healthy wood does not succumb to pressure. Rotted window frames, on the other hand, depress readily. In such cases, the wood has deteriorated internally and requires repair or replacement. Water stains around the window frames are indications of advanced decay. Urgent attention is needed.

Examine the wooden window frames, paying close attention to vulnerable areas, such as the bottom corners of the window frame, the windowsill as well as the lower bottom strip. Check for crumbling paint, brittleness or swelling—all of which do not occur in healthy wood.

1. Inspect the Frames

First determine if the wooden window frames are candidates for repair. Humid, damp geographic areas can contribute to significant rot, making the frames too damaged for repair. If more than 10 percent of the frame is damaged, replacing the entire frame is the solution.

2. Dislodge the Rotted Wood

Removing the rotted parts of the wooden window frame requires a flathead screwdriver or chisel and a brush. Scrape the rotted areas with the chisel or screwdriver until healthy wood appears. Rotted wood is soft, making this step easy. Use the brush to clean the rubble off the surface.

3. Drill Holes into the Healthy Wood

A ¼-inch bit driller is necessary to drill holes into the healthy wood. Space the holes about an inch apart across the wooden window frame. Evenly spaced holes give fillers a better grasp. Once completed, use the brush to clean off any wooden debris.

4. Apply Epoxy

A wood filler product is used to fill the newly drilled holes. The instructions on the wood filler may advise first using a liquid epoxy or other hardener. Apply the epoxy and give it 5 to 10 minutes to cure. Once dried, apply a second layer of epoxy.

5. Cover with Filler

The liquid epoxy in the prior step helps the thicker wood filler adhere properly. Apply the wood filler to restore the frames to their original dimensions. Place a generous amount of filler over the scraped and damaged areas. Mold the filler to match the frame’s shape.

6. Let the Filler Harden

Press the filler firmly into place with a putty knife. Let the filler dry and harden over a 24-hour period or the time recommended on the product label. Sufficient hardening time is essential to prevent the paint in the next steps from soaking into the filler and damaging it.

7. Sand the Window Frame

Using rough-grit sandpaper, such as 80-grit, sand the filler until it is leveled with the window frame. Sand out uneven patches, too. Once the frame has been sanded with the scratchy sandpaper, switch to 120-grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth final finish.

8. Paint or Varnish the Frame

Wipe down the newly sanded window frame with a rag to dislodge any debris and dust. A clean surface is necessary to paint or varnish without particles interfering. Choose a high-quality exterior paint. This type of paint is designed to protect the wood and filler from the outside elements.

Whether opting to paint, varnish, or stain the frame, apply multiple coats. Three coats are enough to provide a solid waterproof barrier between the wood and rain, snow and sleet. Be sure to paint the entire frame to prevent further rot from developing.

Repairing wooden window frames is a relatively straightforward task. But it’s better to prevent the rot in the first place. Inspect the frames regularly, clean them routinely with a soft cloth, and fill any cracks or splinters immediately. Paint them when needed to keep the surfaces free from rot.
